Sustainable Landscape Architecture

Sustainable landscape architecture can mean different things to many people, so the best way to describe sustainable landscape architecture is to explain it as a category of sustainable design involving the planning and design of outdoor spaces. It includes ecological, social and economic aspects and challenges the relationships between site factors and how those factors will adapt to change. Understanding these relationships also clarifies how development impacts from one area of a site to another.

When Angelique designs sustainable landscapes, she takes into consideration many factors but focuses on these 3  dimensions: Environmental, Economic and Social.

The photo below can give you an idea of what sustainable landscape architecture is. For example, this roof garden design can improve habitats for fauna and flora, decrease water runoff, save money through retained heat, and be aesthetically pleasing.

Modelling Environments and ChangeSustainable design is the ‘Key' to our future as healthy ecosystems provide vital goods and services to humans and other organisms, and explains the importance of designing landscapes with the future in mind . There is also a need to provide a healthy, productive, and meaningful life for all members of society, so that the needs of our future generations are not compromised.

Environmental Landscape Architecture
Angelique cares about the environment and has industry experience to design urban landscapes in an environmentally friendly way.

Environmental Landscape Architecture consists of designing areas of land to protect the environment or to enhance the landscape in an environmentally friendly way. Angelique also works with other disciplines relevant to the landscape, I.e from biologists, geologists, water management experts as well as other interested environmental groups when designing in urban or public spaces. The design and landscaping component may be completed for private individuals, government agencies or companies that are trying to environmentally improve landscape particular areas.

When we design this way we  research the various types of soil, plants, animals and even birds that are to be protected in the area. Ecosystem resilience is an integral part of any sustainable development for numerous economic, social and cultural reasons. The type of plants, land contours or even landscaping design will all depend on the specialized requirements of the various species. In some situations Angelique may work directly with environmental groups, activists and even scientists to develop the best possible outcome.

The job starts with meeting the various interest groups and then determining the best options for the project. A report is then written that includes the environmental impact and benefits of the project and a blueprint for the landscape plan is developed based on this research. Various computer programs including GIS are also used to create lifelike models of the final project.

Angelique then meets again with the groups for approval of the project. Any revisions are completed before the project is finalised. Angelique also works with diverse interest groups, facilitating meetings and listening and communicating effectively.

Common activities include:

  • Researching various land types, animals, plants and other living organisms in the area to be landscaped.
  • Developing a landscape plan based on the requirements of the client, interest groups and needs of the animals and plants of the area.
  • Meeting with interested parties to report on the landscaping plan and any environmental impact that may occur.
  • Providing evaluations of the various plans and making recommendations to clients.
  • Promoting environmental landscaping and architecture in the various sectors of the economy.
